00:00:10.292 --> 00:00:14.759
Hello everybody and welcome once again to the unlearned podcast.

00:00:14.759 --> 00:00:25.702
I'm your host with Abigail aka RA, and this is Freedom Friday, where we come and share something we've unlearned recently and now it has made us just a little bit more free.

00:00:25.702 --> 00:00:34.262
So, for those of you that may be like me and you have a lot, you have a lot going on right.

00:00:34.262 --> 00:00:47.213
You have a lot of roles you play, whether you're a parent, a spouse, have a leadership job at work, you're a key volunteer, you're a friend, you're a daughter, you're a son.

00:00:47.213 --> 00:00:51.085
You have a lot of roles.

00:00:51.085 --> 00:01:00.444
So you probably have a lot to do and if you're listening to this podcast, you probably are very growth-minded.

00:01:00.444 --> 00:01:17.927
You want to continue to unlearn, you want to continue to grow, get better, and so those of us like that find ourselves very busy moving a lot, having a lot on our plate, having a lot on the to-do list, having a lot of responsibilities.

00:01:17.927 --> 00:01:24.650
Sometimes they end up piling up a little more than we intend, but we're good, we want to do it Like.

00:01:24.650 --> 00:01:25.742
That's who we feel, like we are.

00:01:25.742 --> 00:01:27.167
We want to push forward, we want to go for it.

00:01:27.167 --> 00:01:28.010
We want to go for it, right.

00:01:28.010 --> 00:01:30.503
Um, I'm one of those people.

00:01:30.503 --> 00:01:31.844
I'm with you, that's me.

00:01:31.844 --> 00:01:40.302
And coming back from Christmas break, uh, I realized we're at the end of January.

00:01:40.302 --> 00:01:56.174
I know that Christmas break was a month and a half ago, I get it, but um, when I tell you that break I broke, it was a real break and it took me a minute to get back into it.

00:01:56.174 --> 00:02:05.647
And so one of the things about I started getting kind of getting back into it and I, man, I just something wasn't clicking, something wasn't.

00:02:05.647 --> 00:02:08.966
I wasn't able to really be as productive.

00:02:08.966 --> 00:02:13.103
I knew I had a lot to do but I just could not get into it.

00:02:13.103 --> 00:02:18.593
I had assignments due, I might've had grants due and I just could not get into it.

00:02:18.593 --> 00:02:29.270
Now I've done all those things, I got them done, but the grind to get the motivation have done all those things, I got them done, but the grind to get the motivation was such a high grind.

00:02:29.270 --> 00:02:31.338
It was higher than it had been, more intense than I remember it being.

00:02:31.338 --> 00:02:33.924
It's like, why can I not get moving here?

00:02:33.924 --> 00:02:45.490
And one day I just I knew what one of the things I needed to do was, just like I needed to get back into my morning routine.

00:02:45.490 --> 00:02:59.848
I had lost my morning routine really for a while where I just kind of spent time with God, spent time with myself read, breathe, pray and just don't go immediately into go mode.

00:02:59.848 --> 00:03:08.961
And so I realized I hadn't started doing that and so I realized I hadn't.

00:03:08.961 --> 00:03:09.461
I had started doing that.

00:03:09.461 --> 00:03:10.745
Well, I started doing it really out of a need, just to relax.

00:03:10.745 --> 00:03:11.867
It's like I just don't have it in me.

00:03:11.867 --> 00:03:15.502
But that really started me back on this really healthy pattern.

00:03:16.704 --> 00:03:23.282
I was listening to a podcast and, um, god was telling kind of the a quick parable.

00:03:23.282 --> 00:03:25.209
A lot of you may have heard it before.

00:03:25.209 --> 00:03:28.486
It was the first time I'd heard it this way and it really just resonated with me.

00:03:28.486 --> 00:03:35.467
Um, say, you know, two guys were in the forest, uh, and chopping down trees.

00:03:35.467 --> 00:03:38.993
First guy starts chopping immediately.

00:03:38.993 --> 00:03:42.568
Second guy sharpens his ax for 10 minutes, starts chopping.

00:03:42.568 --> 00:03:53.448
The second guy, who sharpened his ax, even though he started 10 minutes later, finished cutting the tree down faster and that that stuck.

00:03:53.448 --> 00:03:56.233
I hadn't heard it that way.

00:03:56.233 --> 00:03:59.599
He said it like it was something that had been said forever.

00:03:59.599 --> 00:04:01.088
It was like, oh, this is just, everybody knows this.

00:04:01.088 --> 00:04:11.299
And I was like, excuse me, I don't, I hadn't heard it and it really resonated and I began to ask myself how do I sharpen my ax.

00:04:13.125 --> 00:04:14.728
Why is sharpening my ax so important?

00:04:14.728 --> 00:04:18.492
And I started to realize that the morning routine I had was my sharpened ax.

00:04:18.492 --> 00:04:24.360
And so I want to ask you um, how do you sharpen your ax?

00:04:24.360 --> 00:04:29.613
Do you sharpen it or, like me, sometimes do you just start chopping?

00:04:29.613 --> 00:04:31.338
Go, go, go, go go.

00:04:31.338 --> 00:04:38.098
We have to unlearn that, um, we don't have enough time to sharpen our ax.

00:04:38.098 --> 00:04:42.696
You got to unlearn that you don't have enough time to sharpen your ax.

00:04:42.696 --> 00:04:45.273
You can't afford not to sharpen your ax.

00:04:45.273 --> 00:04:47.973
What do I mean by sharpening your ax right?

00:04:47.973 --> 00:04:54.276
Getting yourself in a position to perform at your maximum capacity.

00:04:54.276 --> 00:04:57.434
How can I perform at my maximum capacity?

00:04:57.434 --> 00:05:04.586
The sharper the ax, the better it's going to cut, and the better it cuts, the faster it cuts right.

00:05:04.586 --> 00:05:07.711
So what do I need to do to do that For me?

00:05:07.711 --> 00:05:09.475
Calm my brain.

00:05:09.475 --> 00:05:11.939
I need to read in the morning.

00:05:11.939 --> 00:05:13.326
I need to pray.

00:05:13.326 --> 00:05:15.512
It doesn't have to be long.

00:05:16.394 --> 00:05:19.449
Sharpening your exes doesn't have to be a long drawn out routine.

00:05:19.449 --> 00:05:20.812
You don't have to spend hours doing it.

00:05:20.812 --> 00:05:22.846
This guy in the parable sharpened it for 10 minutes.

00:05:22.846 --> 00:05:23.629
It's all you need to do.

00:05:23.629 --> 00:05:26.295
It's not how long you do it, but it's what you do.

00:05:26.295 --> 00:05:30.432
So why don't we do that Like why don't we sharpen our ex?

00:05:30.451 --> 00:05:31.954
Because we feel like we're under pressure, because we feel rushed.

00:05:31.954 --> 00:05:32.596
We sometimes feel unprepared.

00:05:32.596 --> 00:05:35.300
Feel like we're under pressure because we feel rushed.

00:05:35.300 --> 00:05:39.048
We sometimes feel unprepared, feel like we're too busy.

00:05:39.048 --> 00:05:41.216
We might feel like we don't have enough time.

00:05:41.216 --> 00:05:44.088
We just don't make the time right.

00:05:44.088 --> 00:05:48.918
So that could be why you don't sharpen it.

00:05:48.918 --> 00:05:58.199
But again, the consequences of not sharpening the ax on the front end, you're going to feel it deeper on the back end.

00:05:58.199 --> 00:06:02.951
So you want it to be meaningful.

00:06:02.951 --> 00:06:04.754
It doesn't have to be long.

00:06:05.437 --> 00:06:08.269
For some of us it's reading, like myself, journaling, praying.

00:06:08.269 --> 00:06:09.252
You might play music.

00:06:09.252 --> 00:06:11.528
You might listen to a podcast get your mind going.

00:06:11.528 --> 00:06:12.716
You might cook breakfast.

00:06:12.716 --> 00:06:16.548
Sometimes sharpening my ax is cooking and I just need to do something.

00:06:16.548 --> 00:06:17.290
You know what I mean.

00:06:17.290 --> 00:06:20.514
This is kind of an aside, but this also really helped me.

00:06:20.514 --> 00:06:23.038
I think that's in the same podcast.

00:06:27.165 --> 00:06:28.752
Like he said something interesting that, again, I never heard before.

00:06:28.752 --> 00:06:35.949
He said if you usually work with your mind, it's good to rest with your hands.

00:06:35.949 --> 00:06:36.733
If you rest with your hands, I'm sorry.

00:06:36.733 --> 00:06:37.961
If you work with your mind, it's good to rest with your hands.

00:06:37.961 --> 00:06:39.245
If you rest with your hands, I'm sorry.

00:06:39.245 --> 00:06:41.250
If you work with your hands, it's good to rest with your mind.

00:06:41.250 --> 00:06:45.127
So if you rest with your, I'm getting it wrong, hold on.

00:06:45.127 --> 00:06:48.615
If you work with your mind, rest with your hands.

00:06:48.615 --> 00:06:50.286
If you work with your hands, rest with your mind.

00:06:50.286 --> 00:07:07.608
In other words, for those of us who might be in the office a lot, we're on my computer a lot, we're in meetings a lot.

00:07:07.608 --> 00:07:09.930
We're doing things mostly with our minds and we're not just physically active at our job.

00:07:09.951 --> 00:07:19.769
A good way to potentially sharpen your axe is to do something active, is to do something with your hands to work a different muscle, to do something with your hands to work a different muscle.

00:07:19.769 --> 00:07:22.312
I like to cook, and I like cooking things that might take me a while to do it.

00:07:22.312 --> 00:07:28.529
I can take my time, I'm not rushed in it, and so that could be one thing.

00:07:28.529 --> 00:07:29.692
I also play music.

00:07:29.692 --> 00:07:31.596
That's another way.

00:07:31.596 --> 00:07:51.670
So something that exercises a different part of you, and if you work with your hands right, reading a book, listening to a podcast, journaling, sometimes doing something that engages your mind in a little bit of a deeper way where your hands are not as active, right, that could be helpful.

00:07:51.670 --> 00:07:52.971
Anyway, that's an aside.

00:07:52.971 --> 00:07:54.767
I thought it was a good advice.

00:07:54.827 --> 00:08:02.439
But whatever it is you need to do to sharpen your eggs either one, like whether it's your hands or whatever it is you need to do it.

00:08:02.439 --> 00:08:09.307
Look, um, it's been cold outside, and so we all know what it's like to walk out to a car that's been sitting out.

00:08:09.307 --> 00:08:11.509
And, uh, my husband's really good with this.

00:08:11.509 --> 00:08:14.894
He makes sure that my car is warmed up every morning.

00:08:14.894 --> 00:08:30.151
I am not good at warming up my own car, so before I was married and even like if he happens to be gone and I got to warm up my own car, I rarely do it, right and so.

00:08:30.151 --> 00:08:36.493
But you can feel a difference in the way your car runs, if you want, whether you warm it up first.

00:08:36.493 --> 00:08:39.467
If you warm it up first or if you just start driving cold.

00:08:40.210 --> 00:08:48.736
Not sharpening your ax is like going out to a car that's been sitting in the cold all night, turning it on and revving up the engine and going.

00:08:48.736 --> 00:08:59.820
You may not have the immediate negative effects you may may not see right now, but over time that car is going to wear out.

00:08:59.820 --> 00:09:01.932
You're going to see the wear and tear on the car.

00:09:01.932 --> 00:09:04.149
Don't do that to your body.

00:09:04.149 --> 00:09:05.134
Don't do that to your brain.

00:09:05.134 --> 00:09:15.119
If you just wake up and go and go, go, go, go, go go, without sharpening your ax, you might begin to see the wear and tear on your body.

00:09:15.119 --> 00:09:18.924
We call it burnout acts.

00:09:18.924 --> 00:09:20.225
You might begin to see the wear and tear on your body.

00:09:20.225 --> 00:09:20.767
We call it burnout Um.

00:09:20.767 --> 00:09:40.671
And sometimes it can be taken care of by 10 minutes of just breathing, praying, resting, um, and really preparing your mind, preparing your soul, preparing yourself for the day.

00:09:41.917 --> 00:09:43.282
Don't just get up and go.

00:09:43.282 --> 00:09:52.815
I've been doing that probably at this point for about a week and I can honestly say, and it's one of those things that's seasonal y'all.

00:09:52.815 --> 00:10:10.682
Like I said, I didn't start off the year like that and it's one of those things that's seasonal y'all Like, like I said, I didn't start off the year like that and I had, like you know, I had a morning routine and for a season I was doing it and then I stopped, I got caught up in the, in the grind, and I was feeling it, and then I I began to take myself back down, rest.

00:10:10.682 --> 00:10:14.809
Don't get up and start cold, warm up first.

00:10:14.809 --> 00:10:33.500
Um, and it's been incredible, I've had some of the best days, um, that that I've had and I one of the things that I am reminded of is that the 10 to 30 minutes you spend on the front end is going to give you hours of valuable time on the backend.

00:10:33.519 --> 00:10:37.375
The 10 to 30 minutes you spend on the front end is going to give you hours of valuable time on the back end.

00:10:37.375 --> 00:10:54.725
The 10 to 30 minutes you spend on the front end preparing yourself, sharpening your ax, warming up your engine right the 10 to 30 minutes you spend doing that will give you hours of valuable time back on the back end.

00:10:54.725 --> 00:11:03.989
So don't don't give up the hours on the back end because you won't give up 30 minutes on the front end.

00:11:03.989 --> 00:11:08.663
Take time, sharpen your ax.

00:11:08.663 --> 00:11:20.741
A good, a good key to know when you need to do it Is, if you ever, if you feel like you don't have enough time to do something, you probably need to sharpen your axe.

00:11:20.741 --> 00:11:28.309
If you're feeling rushed, if you're feeling under pressure, if you're feeling unprepared, if you're feeling like you're too busy, you have too much, it's too much, it's just too much.

00:11:28.309 --> 00:11:32.481
If you're feeling overwhelmed, you probably need to sharpen your axe.

00:11:32.481 --> 00:11:43.017
It's going to feel counterintuitive, it's going to feel counterproductive because you have so many things you have to do, but the reason you have so many things that you have to do is because you haven't been doing the things you need to do.

00:11:43.017 --> 00:11:46.836
And the reason you haven't been doing things you need to do is because you haven't felt the energy to do them.

00:11:46.836 --> 00:11:56.563
And the reason you haven't felt the energy to do them is because you haven't slowed down enough to get yourself warm, to sharpen your ax, so that you can have the real energy to get it done.

00:11:56.563 --> 00:12:00.980
Try sharpening your ax, don't just go cold.

00:12:00.980 --> 00:12:04.602
All right, that's it, folks.

00:12:04.602 --> 00:12:06.620
Hopefully that was helpful.

00:12:07.296 --> 00:12:14.648
