What if truth and reality are not the same? This week on the unlearned podcast, we're taking a deep dive into the intriguing difference between truth and reality. We challenge the popular belief that truth is subjective and explore the idea that while our realities are personal and ever-changing, truth remains constant, existing beyond our individual selves.
So join us on this thought-provoking journey of understanding and unlearning, as we grow towards freedom together. Plus, stay tuned for an exciting new series coming your way in a few weeks.
Hello everybody and welcome once again to the unlearned podcast. I am your host, rida Biel Smith, and today is once again Freedom Friday, which is when me or me and one of my friends comes to share something we've unlearned this week and how it has made us just a little bit more free. So I have a few friends who are going through some tough stuff right now. They're going through some life altering tough stuff like that kind of stuff that you never thought would happen to you, stuff that really is life altering, that was never supposed to happen, stuff, that thing that happens to other people but shouldn't happen to you, that kind of thing. But those are the things that they're that that I have some friends that are going through and you know it's hard to watch people you love go through that And at the same time, it is also a reminder that things can change in a minute. Things can change just like that, without your permission, without warning, and the question is, i think for a lot of us is what do you do with that? What do you? what do you do with that? What do you do when what was supposed to be true is no longer your reality? What do you do when what's supposed to be true is no longer your reality, and I think that is something that I am unlearning is the difference between truth and reality. Now, this is going to be a little controversial, because I know we live in a world that likes to claim that truth is subjective and that we everybody has their own truth, and you really should, you know, follow your own truth or own your truth, and and and there's this phrase, your truth that keeps popping up has been forever right. I mean, we hear that all the time and I find that to be really interesting. We also hear the phrase truth is hard, right, we so. So, on the one hand, we have this subjective understanding of truth, where I get to own it, but on the other hand, we we say that truth is hard. Now, when you think about those two things, why would something be hard when I can determine what it is, all of a sudden? that doesn't really start to make a whole lot of sense. But I think one of the things that makes truth hard is that truth Innately is not something that can change Right. Like truth is truth is truth is truth is always gonna be truth. Like truth is just gonna be true, just like like gravity, gravity is true. What comes up, comes down here on planet earth, like that's true. If I Decide to jump off my roof, it doesn't matter how I feel about it, i'm just gonna fall down. Truth is truth. So I I have to accept that and I think that one of the most, one of the things, that one of the reasons that truth is hard is because truth really does Offend What's inside of us, because truth doesn't happen from within, like truth is constant and And it is so. It is not subject to who I am or what I think I Know. That's like not how we actually think today, and we were not. That's not That. This, i don't know, it sounds kind of old-fashioned or it's just not common anymore. But man, that's just, it's just. That's, it's just the truth. We Truth can't be attached to each individual because of that. If that was indeed true, then truth could no longer, by definition, be truth. It would change all the time. But what does change a lot is our reality. So I think we have to be honest and say, when we say things are my truth, really, i think what we need to be saying is that's my reality and that is very valid. Your reality is your reality. What's real is what's real and, and there's nothing, nobody can take that away from you. If you really feel sad, you really feel sad. That's your reality. If you really hate this person Because they did a thing to you that you hate, that's your reality. Um, if you, you know, don't have the money you want in your account, that's a reality. Um, you know, if you aren't satisfied with your life, with your job, with your spouse, with your kids, what? that's your reality and nobody gets to take that away from you. But Truth is something entirely different. If truth can change from day to day, then I get a little concerned About how we manage What happened, how I get concerned about how we manage the things in our lives that We're never supposed to change. Because if, if, if, truth never changes, how do I manage something that was true, that has changed? I, i, it's. It's a difficult concept. I think we've lost the understanding of what the difference is right Truth versus reality. Our reality is ours, but truth doesn't belong to us. Truth has to belong to what's outside of us. Truth has to belong to something that is, that is uncontrollable by our limited selves as human beings. I mean. So you know, without getting too deep or getting too far down, any kind of like you know, religious context, because I could, we could go there, right, we could go there, but I don't even think it's necessary to go there. I just think that if we can understand and just and just accept that there are things outside of us that we can't control, that we'll never be able to control, and accept that that's a reality And and sometimes our reality will change based on the thing that we can't control that there are things that are constant, that won't change, and those are things that we can freely call truth. But if we can, if we can keep changing truth, then we choose to live a life of instability. So I just think we have to change some language. You know that it's not about, it's not about your truth, it's not about my truth, it's not about living out my truth, and I've used that phrase. So, like I'm even saying to myself, like I want, i need to change my own language, like I've said that I've fallen into those, into that language, but it's really about my reality, like I get to live out my reality, i get to acknowledge my reality. But truth is something entirely different. It's much more sacred, it's much more profound And it doesn't belong to you And it doesn't belong to me. It's outside of us, which is why it's so hard to hear, because it offends the subjectivity of me as a human being, like a truth that doesn't exist inside of myself will be hard to it, will be hard to take, because there is an automatic tension that happens between the truth and my reality. But once, once I've choose to engage that tension, then I can start to manage change on a day to day basis and not allow it to crumble me, not allow it to not allow it to overtake my mind, but understand that even though my reality changes and it will truth doesn't. And at the times when my reality isn't what I want it to be, what is the truth I'm choosing to lean on? That's it. That's it. So unlearning truth versus reality is two different things And I think we have to be honest about that. All right, so we'll see you all next week. Remember, we are heading into a new series here in a few weeks, so y'all keep on a lookout for that. Until next Friday.
